Two of Aesthetic Medicine’s Most Exciting Skin Quality Treatments
In the world of aesthetic medicine, two treatments have risen to prominence for their remarkable ability to improve skin quality rather than simply masking the signs of ageing: Profhilo and polynucleotides. Both are available at Dr Azoo’s clinic in Ealing, and both represent a significant step forward from older approaches to skin rejuvenation. But they work in fundamentally different ways, and understanding the distinction is essential to making the right choice for your skin.
What Is Profhilo?
Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment — but it is very different from a traditional dermal filler. Rather than adding volume or structure in the way a filler does, Profhilo disperses through the skin, deeply hydrating the tissue and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The result is a genuine improvement in skin quality: firmer, more supple, better-hydrated skin that looks naturally refreshed.
Profhilo is typically administered in two sessions, four weeks apart, injected into five specific points on each side of the face using a patented technique known as the BAP (Bio Aesthetic Points) protocol. Results appear gradually over four to eight weeks as the skin remodels itself from within.
The treatment is particularly effective for patients experiencing skin laxity and loss of elasticity — the early signs of ageing where the skin begins to feel less resilient and hydrated. It works exceptionally well as a standalone treatment or as a foundation within a broader aesthetic plan.
What Are Polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides — often abbreviated to PDRN or PN — represent one of the most innovative advances in aesthetic medicine in recent years. Derived from highly purified salmon DNA, polynucleotides work at a cellular level to stimulate the skin’s own regenerative processes.
Unlike Profhilo, which primarily provides hydration and stimulates structural proteins, polynucleotides work by activating fibroblast cells — the cells responsible for producing collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. They also carry anti-inflammatory properties and can improve tissue oxygenation. The overall effect is genuine tissue regeneration rather than simply supplementing what the skin has lost.
Polynucleotides are particularly effective for improving fine skin texture, reducing pore size, addressing undereye hollowing and dark circles, and restoring vitality to skin that has become dull or damaged. They are also increasingly used in combination with other treatments to enhance and extend results.
How Do the Two Treatments Compare?
Both treatments improve skin quality — but through different mechanisms and for different concerns:
Profhilo excels at addressing skin laxity, dehydration, and loss of firmness. It delivers a visible improvement in skin quality relatively quickly and is excellent for patients who feel their skin has lost its vitality and bounce. Results are noticeable, natural, and popular with patients from their late thirties onwards.
Polynucleotides are best suited to patients looking for deeper cellular regeneration — those with concerns around fine lines, skin texture, undereye area, or skin that has been affected by environmental damage. Results develop more gradually but the regenerative effect is progressive and cumulative with continued treatment.
For many patients, the most effective approach combines both treatments, allowing the immediate hydrating and firming action of Profhilo to work alongside the longer-term regenerative effect of polynucleotides. This is a genuinely powerful pairing.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
There is no universal answer — it depends entirely on your skin, your concerns, and what you are hoping to achieve. At Dr Azoo’s clinic, we do not make recommendations based on what is most profitable or fashionable at a given moment. We take the time to assess your skin carefully, understand your goals, and give you honest, evidence-based advice about which approach will genuinely serve you best.
If you are interested in exploring Profhilo, polynucleotides, or how they might work together as part of a considered treatment plan, we would be very happy to arrange a consultation. Contact Dr Azoo’s Ealing clinic on 07400 325 315 or at contact@drazoo.com.
