What Microneedling Actually Does for Your Skin
Microneedling has become one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetic medicine, and for good reason. When performed correctly by a qualified practitioner, it is a genuinely effective, minimally invasive way to improve skin quality, reduce the visibility of acne scars, and stimulate your skin’s own collagen production. But like any treatment, it is worth understanding what it can and cannot do before you decide whether it is right for you.
At Dr Azoo’s clinic in Ealing, microneedling is performed using the medical-grade Dermapen system, which allows for precise, controlled treatment at depths tailored to each patient’s skin concerns.
What Is Microneedling, and How Is It Different from Dermapen?
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a treatment that uses very fine sterile needles to create hundreds of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the top layer of the skin. These tiny micro-injuries are too small to cause any meaningful damage, but they are enough to trigger the skin’s natural wound-healing response: cell turnover, collagen production, and elastin regeneration.
Dermapen is simply the name of the medical-grade device used to perform microneedling at this clinic. It is a substantial step forward from older dermaroller devices, which drag needles across the skin and can create uneven micro-tears. Dermapen uses a precise vertical stamping motion at adjustable depths, which produces cleaner micro-channels and a more predictable healing response. The device can penetrate up to 2.5mm, which matters because different skin concerns require different treatment depths.
When people refer to microneedling and Dermapen, they are generally talking about the same category of treatment. Dermapen is the professional system that delivers it safely.
The Key Benefits of Microneedling
1. It Stimulates Genuine Collagen and Elastin Production
This is the primary reason microneedling works. The controlled micro-injuries trigger your skin’s own regenerative processes, producing new collagen and elastin over the weeks following treatment. Because the improvement comes from your skin rebuilding itself, the results look natural. There is no freezing of expression, no added volume, and no synthetic material in the skin. Just a stronger, firmer, better-supported underlying structure.
2. It Can Visibly Improve Acne Scarring
Microneedling is one of the most well-supported non-surgical treatments for atrophic acne scars (the pitted, indented scars left after active acne has resolved). A 2009 study found that nearly all participants with acne scarring reported a meaningful improvement after a course of treatment, and further head-to-head research published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2016 found microneedling to be comparable in effectiveness to fractional laser treatment, with fewer side effects and less downtime. At the depths Dermapen is capable of reaching, treatment can address scarring that sits well beneath the surface of the skin.
3. It Reduces Fine Lines and Early Signs of Ageing
Because it stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin, microneedling is a genuinely useful tool for addressing the fine lines that appear in the late twenties and thirties, particularly around the eyes, forehead, and mouth. It is often recommended as a maintenance treatment for patients who want to protect skin quality over time, rather than waiting until deeper lines are established. It is not a substitute for Botox for dynamic lines caused by muscle movement, and it is not a filler replacement where volume has been lost. It works on skin quality, and on that front it is very effective.
4. It Can Help Even Out Pigmentation and Sun Damage
By stimulating collagen production and promoting skin cell turnover, microneedling can also improve the appearance of sun damage, dull skin tone, and some forms of hyperpigmentation including melasma. A 2015 study published in the International Journal of Dermatology supported its role as a treatment for blotchy facial pigmentation associated with chronic sun exposure. For these concerns, typical treatment depths sit in the 1.0mm to 1.5mm range.
5. It Refines the Appearance of Pores
It may sound counter-intuitive that creating micro-punctures could make pores appear smaller, but the mechanism is simple: the collagen stimulated around each pore plumps the surrounding tissue, which visually reduces the size of the pore opening. Most patients notice this effect within a few weeks of their first or second session.
6. It Enhances the Performance of Topical Skincare
The micro-channels created during treatment significantly improve the absorption of active ingredients into the skin. Studies have confirmed that serums and other topical products penetrate more effectively in the hours immediately following microneedling. At our clinic, microneedling is sometimes combined with mesotherapy serums, allowing a tailored combination of vitamins, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid to be delivered where they will have the greatest effect.
7. It Can Be Used Across the Body, Not Just the Face
Microneedling is not restricted to the face. Dermapen treatment is regularly used to address stretch marks, surgical scars, and textural concerns on the neck, décolletage, abdomen, back, legs, and arms. Four to six sessions at the appropriate depth can produce meaningful improvement on areas that are otherwise difficult to treat non-surgically.
How Many Sessions Will I Need, and When Will I See Results?
Microneedling is a course-based treatment. Most patients benefit from between three and six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, with the exact number depending on the concern being addressed. Acne scarring and deeper textural concerns tend to need more sessions than general skin quality and early ageing.
Because the results depend on your skin remodelling itself from within, changes appear gradually. Patients usually notice a healthier-looking glow within the first week or two as surface turnover improves, followed by progressive improvements in texture, tone, and firmness over the following one to three months. The collagen response continues to develop for up to six months after treatment.
What Does Microneedling Aftercare Involve?
Downtime is minimal, which is part of the reason microneedling is so popular. Most patients experience redness resembling mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, followed by a day or two of slight sensitivity. Makeup can usually be reapplied after 24 hours, and normal skincare can resume after 48 to 72 hours.
In the days following treatment, your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure, so a high-factor SPF is essential and direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least a week. Active ingredients such as retinoids and strong acids should be paused for a few days to allow the skin to recover. Your doctor will provide a personalised aftercare plan following your appointment.
Who Is Microneedling Suited To, and Who Should Reconsider?
Microneedling is a well-tolerated treatment for most healthy adults looking to improve skin quality, address acne scarring, or soften the early signs of ageing. It suits a wide range of skin types and tones, including skin types that can be sensitive to energy-based treatments such as certain lasers.
It is not recommended for patients with active acne or inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area, active skin infections such as cold sores, a history of keloid scarring, certain autoimmune conditions, or during pregnancy. A thorough medical consultation is part of every treatment at this clinic precisely so these factors can be discussed openly before any decision is made.
Why Patients Choose Dr Azoo’s Ealing Clinic for Microneedling
Every microneedling treatment at this clinic is performed personally by Dr Louay Azoo, a GMC-registered medical doctor and Royal College of Psychiatrists member. Dr Azoo’s dual background in aesthetic and psychological medicine means that consultations are thorough, honest, and focused on what will genuinely benefit each patient. Some patients are offered a different treatment, or a combination with polynucleotide therapy, PRP, or mesotherapy, depending on the concern. Others are advised that microneedling alone will achieve what they are hoping for.
That honesty is deliberate. The clinic is single-practitioner, by appointment only, and built around the relationship between doctor and patient rather than treatment volume.
If you would like to discuss whether microneedling is the right treatment for your skin, contact Dr Azoo’s Ealing clinic on 07400 325 315 or at contact@drazoo.com. By appointment only, Monday to Saturday.
